Two dates worth clearing your calendar for

A Seattle workshop on export readiness and a virtual cheese-and-cider pairing session both land in February. Here's who each one is actually for.

Registrations open this week for two events that couldn't be more different in format, and we'd rather you decide now which one earns a spot on your calendar than scramble in the last few days.

The first is the Valley Export Readiness workshop, in person in Seattle on February 1. This one is built for members who have an export inquiry sitting in their inbox and no idea what to do with it — the paperwork, the cold-chain requirements, the questions a foreign distributor asks that a domestic one never would. It's a full day, it's hands-on, and it fills a room rather than an auditorium, so if it's relevant to you, register before it's not an option anymore. Given how much export interest has picked back up this year as international buyers return to in-person sourcing trips, we expect this one to go quickly.

"I've had an export lead sitting in my email since October and no idea what to do with it," one member told us this week when we mentioned the Seattle session. "I'm driving over for the day just to get someone to tell me if it's worth pursuing." That's exactly the member this workshop was built for.

The second is a much lighter lift: a free virtual webinar on cheese and cider pairing on February 17. No travel, no registration fee, and genuinely useful if you run any kind of retail counter or tasting program and want a fresh angle for a slow midwinter weekend. Pair it with something you're already aging and you've got a new tasting flight with almost no extra work.

Why we're pairing these two in one post

They sit at opposite ends of what membership programming looks like this year. One is a narrow, technical, in-person session for a specific business problem; the other is a broad, accessible, free session anyone can drop into from a laptop in the back office. Both formats matter, and this winter's calendar has more of both than it did the past two years — in-person workshop registrations across the federation are running well ahead of where they sat in 2021, alongside continued strong turnout for the virtual sessions that carried a lot of programming through the pandemic years.

If you're weighing which one is worth the trip, ask yourself a blunt question: do you have an actual export lead right now, or are you curious about export in the abstract? If it's the former, the Seattle workshop earns the day away from the cave. If it's the latter, save the trip and watch the recording of a future session instead — the webinar will do more for you this month.

Looking further out

Both of these sit ahead of the busier spring event calendar, which is shaping up to be one of the fuller ones we've run in a few years. If your business has a seasonal rhythm that makes January decisions easier than March ones, this is a good week to look at the full events calendar and block the two or three sessions that matter most to your year, rather than deciding event by event as invitations land in your inbox.

Questions about either session, or about which one fits your operation, go to the Events Committee — they'd rather steer you to the right room than have you sit through the wrong one.
