Registration for the ICF Annual Conference 2024 opened this week, and if the last two years are any guide, the workshop blocks with the smallest room caps will fill first. We say this every spring and members still write in during the final week asking why a session closed — so consider this the early nudge. Elsewhere in the wider dairy and cheese event world, the same pattern holds: a regional dairy conference we watch closely posted its own "registration now open" notice back in March and was still updating logistics and scholarship details on its page as recently as this week, which tells you how far in advance the planning work behind one of these events actually starts.
The conference itself is still a couple of months out, but a few things are worth locking in now rather than later. Workshop tracks this year lean the way they have since the in-person calendar came back in force: hands-on cave and affinage sessions, a food-safety track aimed at smaller operations, and a retail and case-management track for members on the counter side of the business. If you attended last year and remember a session running long because the room was packed, that's the one to register for first. Comparable events across the wider cheese and dairy calendar have leaned the same direction lately — tastings and hands-on demonstrations paired with more targeted, practical sessions rather than long plenary talks, which matches what our own post-conference surveys have told us members want more of.
What to plan around
If you're bringing a newer team member, this is also a good year for it. The conference program has increasingly doubled as an entry point for apprentices and new hires who haven't been to a flagship event before, and the mentorship pairing that several committees have run informally at past conferences tends to work best when someone signs up with, rather than after, a more senior colleague. A few smaller regional events in our space have started offering partial scholarships specifically to widen who can attend at all — we don't have anything identical to announce yet, but it's the kind of idea our Events Committee has been discussing for next year, and member feedback on it would be useful now rather than after the fact.
For members balancing conference travel against a production calendar, remember that registration doesn't lock your schedule — it locks your seat in the sessions that cap attendance. You can register now and finalize which workshops you're attending closer to the date, as long as you're not counting on a specific room-capped session that's likely to close early.
The practical version
Wherever you're coming from, plan for a Tuesday travel day if the conference opens Wednesday morning; several members have told us in past years that arriving the night before beats trying to make an early session off a same-day flight. And if cost is the barrier rather than time, ask your Membership & Outreach Committee contact about the options that exist for smaller operations — we'd rather help you get there than have you sit this one out.
We'll have the full session schedule posted well before the event. For now: register, pick your track, and if you've got a favorite cave tour from a past year, tell us — we're always looking for hosts for next year's list.
