Insurance is not the fun part, but it's this week's webinar

Webinar: Insurance for Creameries 2024 runs twice this month. A preview of why coverage for a working cave, a retail counter, and a delivery van doesn't fit one policy.

Nobody joins a cheese business for the insurance conversation, which is exactly why it's worth forty-five minutes of your week. Webinar: Insurance for Creameries 2024 runs twice this month — once later this week and again the following one — and it exists because we kept hearing the same complaint from members: their coverage was written for a farm, or for a retail shop, or for a food processor, and their operation is some uncomfortable combination of all three.

That combination is the actual problem. A working cave is a controlled environment with temperature and humidity requirements that a standard property policy doesn't ask about. A retail counter carries general liability exposure a production-only policy doesn't cover. A delivery van moving product between the two is its own line item. Bundle those under a generic small-business package and you'll likely find a gap exactly where you didn't expect one — usually the first time you actually need to file a claim.

The timing isn't an accident, either. Agricultural coverage broadly has gotten more expensive over the past couple of budget cycles, even as commodity prices in some categories have gone the other direction. That squeeze shows up most for smaller operations, which tend to carry thinner margins for absorbing a premium increase and are also, not coincidentally, the members most likely to have pieced their coverage together from whatever policy their broker had on hand rather than one built around a creamery specifically.

What the session covers

The webinar walks through the coverage categories that matter for a cheese operation specifically: property coverage that accounts for a temperature-controlled aging space, liability coverage sized for a public-facing counter or market stand, product liability that holds up if a recall ever traces back to your wheel, and equipment coverage for the vacuum sealers, wrapping lines, and refrigeration units that would take months to replace out of pocket. It also covers the unglamorous but important question of business interruption coverage — what happens to your cash flow if a compressor failure takes your cave offline for six weeks.

None of this is designed to sell you a specific policy. The session is built by our Membership & Outreach Committee working with members who've already had the conversation with their own brokers, and the goal is simply to arm you with the right questions before you sit down with yours. A broker who's never priced a cheese cave will ask you the wrong things if you don't ask the right ones first.

Two dates, same content

Both sessions cover identical material, so pick whichever week works. If you run a small operation and have never separately priced your aging space, your retail exposure, and your equipment, this is worth the calendar hold — even if you walk away deciding your current policy is fine. Knowing that for certain is worth more than assuming it.

Registration is open now through the events page. If you can't make either date, ask your regional rep to loop you in when the recording goes up, and bring your current policy declarations page — the session is more useful if you're checking it against your own coverage in real time rather than trying to remember the details afterward.
