A webinar for the apprenticeship you run alone

Our webinar on building apprenticeship programs is next week. It's aimed at the one-person training department most small creameries actually have.

Most of the members who ask us about apprenticeships aren't running a training department. They're running a creamery, and the apprenticeship is the thing they do between batches, in the fifteen minutes before the delivery truck shows up. We hear a version of the same question every winter: how do you build something that actually teaches a new hire your make process, when you don't have the hours to write a curriculum from scratch.

That's the gap our upcoming webinar on apprenticeship programs is built for. It's virtual, it's free to attend, and it's scheduled for next week — a lunch-hour session rather than a half-day commitment, because we know what a half day costs a two-person cave.

It's also a good week for this conversation for a less pleasant reason. Feed and input costs have been unsteady enough this quarter that a few members have told us they've had to trim staffing hours rather than add them, which means the apprentice who was getting dedicated supervision time in January might be getting five rushed minutes in March. A webinar that fits into a lunch hour, recorded for anyone who can't watch live, is a small accommodation for that reality, but it's the one we can actually offer this month.

What it actually covers

The session is built around three things a small creamery can put in place without hiring anyone new: a one-page skills checklist you can hand a new apprentice on day one, a short log format for tracking what they've done and what they still need supervised hours on, and a simple way to fold that log into your recordkeeping so it's ready if an apprentice later applies toward a credential down the road. None of it requires software beyond what you're probably already using to track batches.

We're also setting aside time for questions from members who've inherited an apprentice mid-program — a situation that's come up more than usual this year, as a few creameries have had to restructure staffing on short notice. If that's you, come with your specific situation; the answer for "I just took over someone else's apprentice in month four" is different from "I'm starting from zero," and we'd rather work through your actual case than a generic one.

Getting on the list

Registration is open now and the session is capped to keep the question-and-answer portion useful rather than rushed. If you can't make the live time, we're recording it and will post the recording along with the skills checklist for members who register, whether or not they attend live. That checklist alone has been the most-requested handout from past sessions, so it's worth registering even if your calendar says you'll miss the live hour.

This is a good one to forward to whoever in your operation actually does the day-to-day training, even if that's not the person who usually reads federation emails. If they've never sat through one of our webinars before, this is a low-stakes place to start — no camera required, and the chat stays open the whole time for side questions. And if your apprenticeship situation doesn't fit neatly into a webinar Q&A, the Education Committee takes one-off questions between sessions too.
